Merry Christmas y'all!

In class I shared with you a Christmas song whose aim was to raise awareness and money for a world problem; this time I'm sharing a famous (and viral!) Christmas advertisement which also includes music and depicts real / historical events. But that's enough as far as I am concerned... as for you:
1. Where and When did the events take place?
2. What can be heard? How do you explain it?
3. What's the sequence of events in the advertisement?
4. If it's an advertisement, what's being advertised? ´
5. Why now? What is so special about Christmas 2014 in this context?
6. How would you describe Jim's act by coming out from the trenches?
7. Research a bit and share here what you find on "Sainsbury's", "No Man's Land", "Christmas Truce".
8. What's fictional? What's real?

If you are into Reading and / or wish to know more about this, do check

- a very short book / longer poem by Carol Ann Duffy called The Christmas Truce;

- a beautiful book with an even more beautiful message by Dr Seuss How The Grinch Stole Christmas.

- the classic tale by Charles Dickens with his famous Scrooge A Chrismas Carol

- another amazing book but on WW I, War Horse;

I'm sure you've already come across other books and movies on these events, so why don't you leave your suggestions here, too?
In the meantime,
Happy Reading and Happy Christmas!

    1. Really nice attempt, Diogo, though not all topics have been covered. As for your text...
      "These events occur at Christmas in the middle of a battlefield and soldiers are singing a Christmas Carol.
      I think that with this ad they believe that at Christmas everyone should leave their problems behind and celebrate Christmas. The example is set by Jim who risked his life in search of some peace to share this Christmas spirit with the enemies."
      Now, what else can you add to answer the questions?

  2. The events take place on a battlefield during the War of the Trenches, in 1914. In this video we can hear a Christmas song and several explosions since it is Christmas in wartime.
    Initially a soldier receives a letter with a picture of his girlfriend and a chocolate for Christmas. Then, the soldiers are heard, in the trenches, singing a Christmas song. Then there was a time when all the soldiers approached, and they wished a good christmas, and started playing football together. The game ended when they heard several explosions and returned to their war posts. Two of the soldiers exchanged gifts.
    In this ad, Sainsbury advertises a chocolate because it´s christmas, the chocolate is one of the products it sells better in this time.
    The Christmas 2014, point out the centenary of the war of the trenches.
    when Jim left the trenches showed an act of courage, confidence and willingness to socialize with their "enemies" and end the war.
    In this video the reality is the war of the trenches, fiction is the Christmas song, play football, exchange gifts, forgetting that they are enemies.
    The sale of each chocolate "Sainsburgy" reverses one euro for a charity

    1. As usual, João, a truly comprehensive answer which covers (almost) all the topics :)
      What's / Where's "No Man's Land"? What's the "Christmas Truce"?
      Thanks.
