Spreading Gratitude

“A thankful heart is not only the greatest virtue, but the parent of all other virtues.”
CÍCERO

I hope today's activity has taught you there is a lot to be thankful for in our every day life; two words, THANK YOU, or even shorter, THANKS, can make a whole difference in our hearts, in other people's hearts, and in the way we face life.
As for the English class itself, well, there is a collaborative document in your gmail account so that each of you can add info on Thanksgiving, a very important festivity in the USA. This time, I flipped it a bit, in other words: below you can find some videos and / or links for you to go through and then be able to do your share. Easy, right? You just have to click on the link of the googledoc I've just sent you, read what you are expected to do, browse / watch the videos and then summarize the info to write down in our shared document. Any questions? Just send me an email, ok?
25points. Deadline: Saturday, 12:00.
Thank you!

I could direct you to amazing websites out there in the web, but I would rather you focus your time and attention in a single one which encapsulates the relevant info. Please check the written material as well as the videos at http://www.history.com/topics/thanksgiving to accomplish your task!

  2. In view of the videos and the research I did, the first day of thanksgiving was celebrated in 1620 in Plymouth, by settlers.
The reason of this celebration was to thank God for the good agricultural crops, after they have had a bad year. The population of this small village, decided to kill turkeys and ducks to eat and celebrate outdoors, a large popular conviviality.
Since then, this day came to be celebrated until the present day, especially in the USA and Canada, for people thank God for the blessings received during the year.
The Thanksgiving day became a national holiday in those two countries. Americans celebrate at the fourth Thursday of November.
It is a day of family party, the main dish is roast turkey, but the meals include other typical foods of the region, such as; pumpkin, sweet potato, nuts and others.
The turkey is an ancient tradition and preserves the memory of the rustic way of life of the settlers, when they came to these territories. Another reason was that the turkey fed more people than a chicken or a duck.
The Thanksgiving Day is celebrated with great shows, where participating media figures and famous characters in children's world, including Spiderman and Mickey. On this day there's football, much appreciated mainly by men, after the banquet.
The next day, Black Friday is celebrated, in many shops in the USA, are very advantageous deals and are invaded by thousands of people who take the opportunity to do their Christmas shopping.

Another proof (as if we needed more!) of our exposition to American culture and way of life is the recent introduction of "Black Friday"! Those who went shopping yesterday could really enjoy "better" prices once everything had 20% off.
      Congratulations, top boy!
