The Boy in The Striped Pyjamas

Jan 27 marks International Holocaust Remembrance Day, and 2015 in particular, the 70th Anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi death camp.

In order to remember that date, I chose an excerpt of a famous movie "The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas (Pajamas in AE) based on a novel with the same name by John Boyne.

There are many and awesome books and movies depicting this dark period of our recent History, but I chose this one because all the horror of that reality is seen through the eyes of two 8 yr-old boys, who have nohing else in common besides their age. It's indeed a fascinating historical drama, but I'm not going to tell you much else... it's up to you to find out by doing the activities at https://edpuzzle.com/ according to the instructions already sent to you by email.
Due Date: Fri Jan 30, 11:59 pm!!!

  3. We have never seen this film because such stories make us feel sad, anyway some people suggested us to watch it because it's a meaningful and deep movie. Summing up, we would like to see it.

  4. I’ve already watched this film. It was one of the most important films that I watched it’s very interesting to know our past. When I watched it I was shocked in fact I didn’t think there was so much evil in the world. I hope that these things won’t happen anymore in the future.

  5. We really liked your article about the Holocaust and also the movie you posted is very beautiful and interesting. In our school and in all over the Italy we remember this day too,the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau and all the victims of Nazism. Another interesting film about the Holocaust is an Italian film called “La vita è bella”(Life is Beautiful). We suggest you to watch this film too.

    1. We are not used to remembering this date, but I am sure that these students will never forget it - not only due to this great movie, but also after your wonderful input. I'm really thankful for that - to all who have already left their comments and to your teacher :)
There is no lack of awesome films (and books) on WWII - Schindler's List, The Pianist, The Book Thief - to name just a few - and an unavoidable one, Life is Beautiful, you're absolutely right! But, you know, CoolBoy4, I've never managed to finish watching that movie as it is sooooooo sad...
Again, thank you - all - for your contributions.

  6. We haven’t watched this film yet but we are really interested in this issue and we look forward to discovering the little child’s story. In this day, on the 27th of January, we remember thousands of people: men, women and children who were exterminated in the death camp. A film we watched is : “La vita è bella “ ,which is the most famous film in Italy about the Holocaust and we suggest to watch it to everyone.

  7. We also remember this date like a big event. This date is bad to remember because it reminds us millions of dead , killed in the Nazi Death Camp without no reason . We watched some movies about this event like “The boy in the striped pyjamas” and “Anne Frank’s diary” . we hope that this event won’t happen because it is very bad for the society , the people and specially the children .

    1. Dear Angelo and Vincenzo,
Thank you for commenting here. Too many perished during WWII for no reason other than having been born Jews, Gypsis, ... Noone deserves to suffer that much or die for that, specially children, yes!
You mention a "classic" book / movie: "Anne Frank's Diary". Most of our Portuguese students have already come across that diary as it is one of the recommended readings in our schools.

  8. this film is very important because it is about a famous period in European history: the nazi extermination against the Jewish population, the Rom and the omosexual. It should learn us that to kill people who have a different religion, political thought and come from other countries is terrible and no one should do it, but unfortunately today there are a lot of people who descriminate who is “different”. In our opinion all of us should learn to respect the others and we should stop all the wars because they cause destructions and death.

    1. Absolutely!
You have just referred to Article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights:
"All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood."
Thank you so much, Vito & Vincenzo

  9. We remember this important day each year too. We watched this sad film and we can’t understand why people did that and go on acting in this way in fact even today there are a lot of wars.

  10. We saw ‘The Boy in The Striped Pyjamas’ last year. This film is very sad, but it shows the cruelty of Nazi camps and it makes us understand that love and friendship can’t be limited by enclosures. In fact it is the enclosure itself that connects the two children and that represents a point of meeting between them. Tomorrow we are going to remind the International Holocaust Remembrance Day by reading poems with our teachers and talking about that.

  12. I've seen the movie for a long time, but I still remember the most essential. Like when I saw was new, not quite realized the movie, but now I see its importance, I see how times before were cruel, unjust and depressible. What matters is that it is past, and past the museums are made, and the same the important facts,

  13. I've seen this movie and really enjoyed it. It is a very sad but beautiful story, despite living in different worlds, a friendship developed between two innocent children, independently of the reality that separated them.
